The History of Murphy Business
Roger Murphy relocated from New Hampshire to Palm Harbor, FL, after a successful career in the publishing industry. During his publishing career he was involved in many magazine and newsletter startups and acquisitions. He also had experience in managing a direct mail agency and a publishing related consulting firm. In March of 1994, Mr. Murphy incorporated as Murphy Business & Financial Services, Inc. Working independently in a home office, Mr. Murphy began networking within the business community and began the process of listing, marketing and selling local businesses.
As his client base expanded, Murphy realized the need for additional space. So, he leased space in a business center in Dunedin, FL. Others in the business brokerage community noticed Murphy's success and contacted him to discuss joining his company. Murphy Business & Financial Services, Inc.'s growth commenced.
Growth of Murphy Business & Financial Services, Inc.
Enjoying continued success, Murphy Business & Financial Services, Inc. expanded from a single location with several agents in Dunedin, FL to opening its first branch office in August 1998 in Sarasota, FL. In 1998 Jim Sinclair, joined the MBFS team as Sales Director having previously owned and operated his own successful business brokerage office in Tampa, Florida. Continued success brought Murphy to once again move the company in October 2004 into a newly constructed 7500 square foot office building in Clearwater, FL .
From 1998 until 2006 when the company began franchising, Murphy Business & Financial Services, Inc. operated thirty branch offices with over fifty broker/agents in Florida. In 2006, twenty six of those offices were converted to Murphy Business & Financial Corporation franchise offices. In addition, the main office in Clearwater was up into separate units, one being the Florida Regional Franchise Operation and one being the newly formed MBFC Corporate Headquarters team.
During this period of expansion, Roger Murphy realized the need for additional support to complement the business brokerage operations. Capitalizing on this need, he introduced the following:
2003
Murphy Valuation Services, Inc.
Murphy Valuation Services, Inc. was established to provide clients and prospects professional business valuations and/or appraisals. These valuation reports range from simple market-based “Brokers Opinion of Value” to professional “Formal Business Appraisals.” These reports are typically used for business Sales, Gift/Estate Taxes, Loans/Financing, Estate Planning, Divorce, ESOPS, Life Insurance, Partnerships, Buy/Sell Agreements, Mergers, Shareholder Disputes, Conversion from “C” to “S” Corporations, etc.
Murphy Commercial Realty, Inc.
As an additional service to our clients, we provide Commercial Real Estate brokerage as well as Leasing, Property Management and Real Estate Searches. Some of these services can be performed by the local franchisee while others can be provided by the professionals at the National Headquarters or the Regional Developer’s Office. Most states do not require a Real Estate License to perform business brokerage, thus resulting in many brokers being unable to collect commissions on the real estate portion of their transactions. Under our system, we attempt to ensure that we have a licensed person in each state in order to assist those clients wishing to sell the property with the business. Also, we are able to attract additional inventory of products vs. the broker who only sells businesses.
2004
Murphy M & A, Inc.
Murphy M & A, Inc. focuses on larger companies, generally with revenues in excess of $5 Million and EBITDA of over $1 Million. The buyers in the M & A arena are typically Private Equity Groups, Private Investment Groups or Corporate Buyers. In addition, there may be an opportunity to perform searches for companies looking to expand by acquisition.
2006
Murphy Business & Financial Corporation
Roger Murphy was approached by franchising expert Tom Miller about taking the business model that was so successful in Florida and converting it to a national franchise. Murphy Business & Financial Corporation was created with an ownership group of Roger Murphy, Tom Miller, and Jim Sinclair. The concept of the newly formed company was to provide the franchisees with “first class” back office support, comprehensive training, on going support from both a local and national level, and the best tools and resources available in the industry.
First Unit Franchise Sold
The first unit franchises were sold in October, 2006. Mr. Richard Gadberry purchased the North Texas Regional Franchise that same year.
